Ceramic Inlays & Onlays.
When a tooth is too damaged for a simple filling but still has enough healthy structure that it doesn't quite need a full crown, an Inlay or Onlay is the ideal evidence-based solution. Think of it as a "partial crown" or a custom-engineered puzzle piece. An Inlay sits inside the grooves of your tooth, while an Onlay (often called a "three-quarter crown") covers one or more of the biting points (cusps) to provide structural reinforcement. At Leichhardt Dental, we do not use generic lab-processed ceramics. For every restoration, we exclusively use Ivoclar e.max®—widely considered the world's best-selling and most reliable glass-ceramic. We chose Ivoclar e.max® for two critical reasons: unrivalled strength, designed to withstand the heavy biting forces of back teeth and significantly reduce the risk of your tooth fracturing; and natural aesthetics, mimicking the translucency and light-reflection of real tooth enamel so perfectly that the restoration is virtually invisible once bonded. By combining Ivoclar materials with our in-house CEREC technology, we 3D-scan your tooth (no putty required), precision-design your restoration on screen to match your bite perfectly, mill it from a solid Ivoclar e.max block in our clinic, and fit and bond it in a single 90-minute visit. A typical inlay or onlay is approximately $1,500–$1,700.

Risks & considerations
As with crowns, possible risks include transient sensitivity after preparation, the small chance the nerve is affected and root canal treatment becomes necessary, and — uncommonly — chipping or debonding of the restoration over time. How long a restoration lasts depends on your bite, oral hygiene, and regular check-ups. A consultation determines whether an inlay or onlay is the right option for your tooth.
All dental procedures carry potential risks and benefits. Individual results vary. A consultation with a registered dental practitioner is required to determine whether a treatment is suitable for you.
