Airway, Snoring & Sleep (Adults).

Adult dental care is about more than worn or crooked teeth. The structural position of your jaws, tongue, and bite affects how well you breathe and sleep. A narrow upper arch, a recessed lower jaw, or a deep overbite leaves less room for your tongue — and during sleep, when the throat muscles relax, the tongue can fall back and restrict the airway. That can show up as chronic snoring, obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA — where the airway partly or fully collapses and briefly cuts off oxygen), and daytime fatigue, brain fog, or morning headaches. We assess this airway picture as part of adult orthodontic care. Where sleep-disordered breathing is suspected, we partner with Arise to arrange a medical-grade home sleep study: you pick up a lightweight kit from the clinic, wear the non-invasive sensors for one night in your own bed, then drop it back the next morning — and the data is analysed by independent, qualified sleep physicians. We don't diagnose sleep conditions in-house. If a study confirms snoring or mild-to-moderate OSA, a custom Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS) is one evidence-based option: a slim nighttime appliance that holds your lower jaw and tongue gently forward to keep the airway open. Adult Invisalign — widening a narrow arch to create "tongue space" — is another pathway. A custom MAS typically ranges from $1,800 to $2,500.

Process

How airway, snoring & sleep (adults) is delivered.

  1. Step 01

    Airway screening

An initial assessment at Leichhardt Dental Centre. If a sleep issue is suspected, you're set up with an Arise home sleep study kit to take away.

  2. Step 02

    Home sleep study

You wear the lightweight, non-invasive sensors for a single night in your own bed, then drop the kit back the next morning. The data is analysed by independent, qualified sleep physicians.

  3. Step 03

    Digital scan & fabrication

If a MAS is indicated, a 3D intraoral scan (no putty) is used to custom-make a slim, medical-grade appliance.

  4. Step 04

    Fitting & titration

The appliance is fitted and gradually fine-tuned over the first few months to bring your jaw to the optimal breathing position.

  5. Step 05

    Follow-up care

Regular reviews over the first 6 months track your sleep improvements and protect your jaw joint health.

Risks & considerations

Diagnosis of sleep-disordered breathing requires referral to an appropriate medical specialist — we don't diagnose sleep conditions in-house, and any home sleep study is analysed by independent sleep physicians. A MAS suits snoring and mild-to-moderate OSA; severe OSA is generally better managed with CPAP, and we refer accordingly. A MAS can cause temporary jaw or tooth discomfort, increased salivation, or minor bite changes, which titration and regular reviews help manage. It isn't suitable for everyone — your jaw-joint health and bite are assessed first.

All dental procedures carry potential risks and benefits. Individual results vary. A consultation with a registered dental practitioner is required to determine whether a treatment is suitable for you.
